People dream of losing weight without changing their lifestyles, but this is a flawed mentality. Most people don’t realize that this is a necessity. They think that by simply running or walking, the weight will come off. They don’t know that they can still gain weight while running, if the amount of calories they eat exceeds the amount they use. Let’s say that you eat 3,500 calories per day and your body uses 2,000.

You could go run four miles and in doing so would probably burn about 750 calories, depending on your weight and metabolism. Even though you ran four miles, you would still have an excess of 750 calories in your body, which would result in a weight gain of about 1/5 of a pound. That means you’re going to gain a pound about every week, even if you run four miles per day.

This is why the best weight loss method around is to make sure your diet stays under control. If your body uses 2,000 calories per day, you will have to eat less than that to lose weight. The other option is to eat about 2,000 and make up for it with exercises that can burn additional calories.

It’s all about the calories folks, and you’re not going to like the next step in this lesson. I would start counting how many calories you eat each day. If you do this for a few weeks, you will have a good idea of where you stand. You can then start to cut excess calories to start lowering your intake. I would recommend lowering your intake by about 500 calories, and then giving it about a month to see what happens to your weight.

If you have lost weight in that time period, you know that you are at a good caloric level. If your weight stays exactly the same, you will need to lower your intake even further or take on some cardiovascular exercise. To achieve best results, you need to know what calorie range you should get yourself into. This is achieved by testing different intake levels with results.

While it is tempting to believe that a magic pill or potion is all that you need to achieve natural weight loss, the hard truth is that losing weight is just not that simple in most cases. For the vast majority of people, a combination of exercise, changes in eating habits, and perhaps the use of appropriate natural weight loss aids will be needed in order to lose weight long-term.

There are many natural weight loss products available and additional ones come out all the time. Each promises to be nearly miraculous in it’s effects and people buy the latest and greatest weight loss aid with eager anticipation, hoping that it will finally be the answer to their weight problems. They want to believe that a pill, or a patch, or a tea, etc.. will be all they need to lose weight and that diet and exercise won’t be necessary (because dieting and exercising are difficult). Even though deep down they probably know that the latest weight loss miracle being hyped is no better than all the things they’ve tried before, they want to believe it will work, and so they buy it, only to be disappointed again.

Now this is not to say that natural weight loss aids are all completely worthless. The truth is, a lot of weight loss aids actually have the effects that their prooters claim. For example, hoodia gordonii (at least the real stuff) does seem to be a very effective appetite suppressant. So, if the main reason that you have trouble losing weight is because you have out of control hunger that makes you eat excssively, hoodia may be a big help. The problem is that most people are not overeating out of actual hunger. They may eat out of boredom, out of habit, out of a need to satisfy a craving, or out of a need to soothe some emotional issue they are dealing with, but they don’t eat out of hunger. Hoodia is not going to help you if you aren’t eating out of hunger.

Other natural weight loss aids may work by increasing the metabolic effects of diet and exercise. It kind of stands to reason that if you fail to incorporate diet and exercise the effects of these products will be pretty minor.

Some natural weight loss aids block the absorption of fat by the digestive tract and thereby lower the calories you absorb from each meal. While this does tend to help with weight loss, unless you stop eating everything except fat (which is not a good idea), you still are taking in other calories that, in excess, will be converted to fat AFTER they are absorbed from the digestive tract. For optimum results, again we see that a good eating plan and exercise are necessary.

At this point, you may have guessed that one of the primary points I am trying to make is that lsting natural weight loss, absolutely requires a healthy eating plan and regular exercise. No weight loss aid, natural or otherwise will by itself make you lose weight and keep it off. In fact, the ads for weight loss aids will usually state this very thing, even though it is in microscopic print at the bottom of the ad.

What it comes down to is that natural weight loss is built on a foundation of sensible diet and exercise. With a good diet and exercise program in place, you may get additional benefits from using one or more of the natural weight loss products on the market. But do your research to find a product that serves your particular needs. In other words, if you’re not overeating out of hunger, don’t buy an appetite suppressant. If you’re already minimizing your fat intake, don’t waste your money on a fat blocker.

Now, once you have your weight loss plan in place with your diet, exercise program, and whatever natural weight loss aids you choose to use, there’s one little thing that needs to happen for you to successfully lose weight. You have to stick to the program! If there’s one thing that renders the vast majority of natural weight loss efforts ineffective, it’s a lack of follow-through.

It has been my experience that very few people stick to a natural weight loss program consistently for more than two weeks at a time. Of course, some people may intermittently follow a weight loss program for months or years, but they get sidetracked over and over again and really are not consistent for more than one or two weeks in a row, so they never get any momentum and achieve their goals.

A new study that tested the relative effectiveness of several popular diet plans revealed a fascinating finding. The overall success rates of most of the currently popular diet programs were about the same. The success or failure of any given diet had little to do with what the approach was. In other words, low carb, low fat, calorie restriction, eating for blood type, etc., really didn’t matter. The thing that actually mattered was if the person consistently followed the program! To sum it up, it doesn’t matter so much what you do to lose weight (within reason), as much as it matters that you do it consistenty long-term!

To be able to stick to your natural weight loss program, it is critical that you take charge of your thoughts and emotions. A lot of different ways exist to get control over your own mind, and different ways have varying degrees of effectiveness from one person to the next. hear people complaining about having to diet all the time. I do anyway. Yes, it is hard not being able to eat everything in site. Having to pass up a second or third piece of candy or fudge or cake because you know it will go strait to a certain part of your body and hang out there for the rest of your life.

The good news is that if you have the right mindset and know how nutrition works, than you can have that second or third piece. I know that sounds crazy, but it is true. I have eaten cake and ice cream and still lost weight. I do it all the time. I might have lost more weight, more quickly if I did pass up the cake and ice cream, but why? I want to keep losing weight and still be happy to accept an invitation to a birthday party.

If you make your weight loss plan hard and painful, you will soon be off of it and more than likely gain more weight than you lost before you started that diet. There have been studies that show this. So the best thing to do is make your diet as simple and easy as you can.

You are probably still wondering how I can eat cake and ice cream and still lose weight. The reason is simple, I don’t do it everyday. I only weigh myself once a week. I look at the big picture and not each meal. When I do treat myself, the next meal I am right back to eating the way I should eat. I might exceed my calorie intake by 500 that one day, but the other six I am below my calorie intake daily requirements. It is fairly simple actually.

Once you learn the foods that are packed with calories and fats that you eat, just find something else to substitute that you enjoy eating just as much. It is not that hard now days. There are plenty of choices at the market, you just have to find them. Once I rid my kitchen of the entire collection of high calorie, fatty foods I had, and learned how to eat small meals throughout the day to keep from getting to hungry and binge eat, the pounds started falling off each week. It is amazing how good low calorie, healthy food is too. You have so many choices and you can do so much with it.

You also have to know how to keep your metabolism fueled up and running at high speed to burn those calories you consume. It is important to have your daily requirements of protein, carbohydrates, fats, and vitamins. If you deprive your body of one of those, then your metabolism will slow and not burn the calories off. You need all of your food groups each day, and need to start your day by taking a good multi vitamin, or a pack of vitamins like I do. You also have to eat when you are hungry. You need to snack if you get hungry between meals and eat meals a little early if you get hungry then. Hunger tells you that your metabolism fuel is low.

Then if you throw in a little exercise your off to the races. Exercise is hard for a lot of people, but once you find something you like, and the key thing is to start off slowly and work your way up after a while, you will find you will have so much more energy throughout the day. Every movement you make burns calories. Twiddling your thumbs burns calories. You have to do a lot of twiddling though to make a difference, but just keep on the move all day and you will be burning calories. Strength training is also good. The muscles you are building will help burn away the calories also.

The right mindset. I mentioned that earlier. That plays a big part in losing weight and being healthy. I have a little voice in my head that always asks me a question every time I see food that is not good for me and I want to reach for it. It says, Mike, do you want to be thin and healthy, or do you want to enjoy that for one minute? Enjoy the food for one minute, or be thin and healthy for the rest of your life. One minutes pleasure, or thin and healthy for the rest of my life. It is an easy decision. I love that I have lost 56 pounds since the beginning of the year. I love losing weight and how much better I feel. That is how you need to think. You need to make a choice between thin and healthy or a minute of eating something that will take that away. Of course once you know how to moderate your eating, you can have a few minutes of pleasure and know you will be able to still lose weight by the weeks end.

I have just touched the surface on how easy a good weight loss plan is. There is a lot more to it than I can explain in a short article. You need to do a little research yourself on what your daily calorie intake should be, and then learn how to shop for the right foods you like. You will also have to learn that slow and easy is the only way to lose weight, the same way you put it on, and you will be able to lose it for the rest of your life. You will need to analyze your eating habits and find out which foods that you eat now are causing you not to lose weight. What habits you have now that you will need to break. The first 2 or 3 weeks once you decide to get serious are the hardest. Then it starts to become routine. It takes 21 days of doing something everyday for it to become a habit. That is not long. Aerobic exercise is fat burning exercise. As you do some activity using large muscles (legs, especially) that raises your heart rate but still allows you to breathe normally, your body will burn fat with the oxygen you’re breathing. However, your body will only burn blood-sugar at first, because it’s easily available. So, to get to the fat-burning stage, you have to exercise for at least 20 minutes, preferably 30 minutes or more. Walking and bicycling at a gentle pace are aerobic activities.

Anaerobic exercises are high-intensity exercises that get your muscles working hard, and you will have trouble breathing. The word “anaerobic” means “without air”, meaning that you will be breathing fast, but still not getting enough oxygen to properly fuel your muscles. This leads to muscle strengthening, but it also means that you’re burning blood-sugar only, not fat, and you end up with lactic acid that will make your muscles feel like they’re burning. Weight training and sprinting are anaerobic activities.

You can keep doing aerobic exercise longer than anaerobic exercise, and you’ll burn about equal amounts of calories overall doing either. Aerobic exercise burns those calories from fat during the exercise. Anaerobic exercise only burns blood-sugar, but burns a lot of fat later (the rest of the day) to replace the energy. How to do Interval Training

The “intervals” in Interval Training are alternating periods of high-intensity exercise with low-intensity rest periods. This allows a person to keep exercising for at least 30 minutes to kick in the effects of aerobic activity, but it is also intense enough to strengthen the heart and provide the long-term fat burning of high-intensity exercise. The idea is simple, but ingenious, and amazingly effective.

You can do interval training using a time-measure or a distance-measure. If you prefer to run indoors in a gym’s track, then there is probably a clock to watch while running, so time would be more convenient to keep track. If you prefer to train outdoors, it may be inconvenient to look at your watch every few seconds, so going by distance will probably be easier. If you use time, you should run as fast as you can for one full minute, then walk for two minutes. After that, run again for one more minute and rest by walking for two minutes. Keep repeating this three-minute cycle until 30 minutes have elapsed overall. If you prefer to chart distance, you will want to run about a half-mile, then walk for one-quarter mile, and keep alternating that.

Increasing your VO2-max with interval training will give you greater endurance for everything you do, and the higher your VO2-max, the less you will feel that heat or pressure on your lungs when you exercise. Believe me, after interval training for a week, you will know without a fancy test that your VO2-max is improving, and soon you’ll feel the improvement with every training session. It’s a great feeling.

Improving Intervals

Using the time method is better than distance to keep yourself honest, because as you get faster, your half-mile will turn out to take less and less time. So, to keep improving your performance, and keep losing weight, you should either get a stopwatch, or else keep making your running intervals farther and farther (to make sure they still last a whole minute).

As your VO2-max increases, you may be tempted to make your workouts last longer overall, or to make the high-intensity periods last longer. You should do neither of these things. Your goal should be to keep intervals of 1-minute of running separated by 2-minutes of walking, and keep increasing the intensity of each running interval. If you make every interval a sprint for one full minute, and keep that up for 40 minutes, you are already a superhero. Longer workouts risk breakdown of tissues and a high burden on your kidneys and other organs. And if you make each interval longer, you may not be pushing your speed the most you can, which is where the benefits are.

At the other end of the scale, if you’re just starting interval training, go easy. Too many men start off too fast and burn themselves out within 10 minutes. That will not benefit you. Warm up with a fast walk or a gentle jog for 10 minutes or so. Then, try your first interval. It should be for one full minute, but just try for a pace a little faster than a jog. Then walk for two minutes. For your next interval, just try to maintain that fast jog pace for another full minute. Then walk again for two minutes. Don’t sit down or stop if you can avoid it, keep walking to recover. On your third interval, try just a little faster. If you can’t make it for the full minute, you have just found out where your zone is. The key isn’t to try to sprint right away and only be able to go for 20 seconds. You have to do the full minute at a constant pace, as fast as you can sustain for one whole minute. I guarantee that it will be pretty slow your first time. But try it again the next day, and you will be better. By the end of two weeks, you’ll be amazed how much more fit you’ve become. I promise.

Refined Carbohydrates - the Enemy of Weight Loss

Although most dieters have heard that it’s a good idea to avoid carbohydrates (especially sweets, bread, pasta, cereal, etc.) when trying to lose weight, many not understand why carb avoidance is so necessary for losing weight. Even doctors may make the claim that calories are calories and to lose weight all you have to do is eat fewer calories than you burn through your activities. The thing is, hormonal factors can influence how easy or hard calories from a given type of food are to burn. With a little investigation, it becomes obvious that a high intake of carbohydrates, regardless of one’s total calorie intake, will make the body prone to depositing fat.

At the heart of the matter is the hormone insulin. The function of insulin is to stimulate the cells to take up sugar from the bloodstream (when blood sugar is high, as it typically is shortly after eating) and store it for reserve energy.

The surplus of sugar in the bloodstream is initially stored in the tissues of the liver and large muscles in the form of glycogen. Glycogen can be quickly converted back to blood sugar when needed for energy to fuel sudden bursts of activity. The available storage space for glycogen is pretty limited, and when insulin has caused the glycogen storage to be filled up, the remaining excess blood sugar is stored as fat.

There is considerably more storage space in the body for fat than there is for glycogen. There are billions of fat cells in the body, each of which can enlarge to over 100 times it’s original size to accomodate extra fat storage. As an aside, this is why it is possible to get fat again after liposuction - even if you remove many of the body’s fat cells, those that remain can enlarge considerably to store fat.

Insulin is extremely powerful in its fat storage effects. In fact, not only does it stimulate fat storage, high levels of insulin block the effects of the body’s fat burning mechanisms. It is for this reason that minimizing the intake of high-carb foods is so important.

High carbohydrate intake (and it really doesn’t need to be very high) stimulates the release of large quantities of insulin. Large amounts of circulating insulin will strongly inhibit the body from being able to burn fat for a period of 1 to 2 days! In fact, a single meal containing 20 to 25 grams of refined carbohydrates (about the amount in a slice of sandwich bread) can completely block your ability to burn fat for 1 to 2 days - regardless of what you eat and how much or how hard you may exercise during that time.

Some people mayhave doubts about that last statement as it is certainly possible to eat a lot of carbs and lose weight - for a while anyway. Notice that I said that high carbohydrate intake causes high insulin production that blocks FAT burning. It is still possible to eliminate retained water (which will produce weight loss), and it is still possible to burn calories, but the calories you do burn will not be from fat, they will be from glycogen and your lean body tissue, primarily your large muscles. As you may be aware, lean body tissue (muscle) is highly metabolically active, and if you burn that tissue, ultimately your metabolism will slow down, making it harder and harder to lose weight.

Because of the effects of insulin, minimizing carbohydrate intake is strongly recommended for sustainable fat burning and the most efficient and lasting natural weight loss. Now, not every person will do well to go on the Atkins diet and eat only protein and fat. Excessive protein intake can create its own problems that can ultimately interfere with ongoing weight loss due to detrimental effects on the liver. For the majority of people, the most effective diet is one that is high in fresh or frozen vegetables, nuts, seeds, moderate quantities of fresh fruit, and some protein from eggs, dairy, lean meat, fish, and poultry. The carbohydrates you do consume are best obtained in high-fiber forms from vegetables, fruits, seeds, and nuts, rather than from refined grains.

A few diet plans will recommend a low carbohydrate intake, yet suggest allowing yourself a “reward” of some high-carbohydrate food like a cookie or other sweet as often as once per week. I disagree with this recommendation as it can sabotage your natural weight loss program on two levels. First, as we’ve been discussing, the carbs will trigger a high insulin release which will shut off your ability to burn fat for up to two days. So, at once per week, you could lose as much as 8 days per month of potential fat burning - decreasing the effectiveness of your diet by as much as 25%! The other problem is that eating carbs tends to set you up for carb cravings. At the very least, such cravings will test your will-power, and they could cause you to cheat on your diet repeatedly. This could ultimately doom your diet to total failure. I recommend that you refrain from eating refined carbs except on special occasions (parties, holidays, etc.) and this ideally would be at a frequency of at most, once every 4 to 6 weeks.

Hopefully you now have a better understanding of why high carbohydrate consumption is so damaging to a natural weight loss plan. If you commit to a healthy diet and avoid the carbs for 2 to 3 weeks, you will likely find that you don’t really miss them after that period of time and so avoiding them becomes much easier. With a little extra effort early on, you’ll find that eating a healthy diet becomes natural to you and you’ll be able to reach your long-term weight goals.

There are so many weight loss products on the market that it can be difficult to know what to choose.

Is Brand X really better than Brand Y?

How come you should cut out carbs with one diet yet eat as many of them as you want with another?

If that person really did lose 28 pounds in as many days, can someone like you do the same?

The claims sound good - but then no-one is going to tell you that their product sucks, are they?

So the first thing you need to do when looking for a weight loss product is to develop a healthy skepticism.

If there’s a claim, check it out. That’s easy to do nowadays with the internet but we often take the short cut of thinking that if a claim is printed, it must be the truth. It may well be true but it may not always be 100% honest. Someone, somewhere almost certainly lost weight using the product you’re thinking about. But could you do the same?
